The first official season was played in June-July 2012. Switzerland became the first official European champion after beating Germany on the final in Russia with 3-0. Massimo Mombelli was the top scorer of the tournament with his 9 goals for Switzerland.
The second official European championship organized by EHF was hosted by Hungary. The final wasn't played and the title was shared between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia. Massimo Mombelli was again the top scorer of the competition scoring 5 goals and helping Switzerland reach the semi-finals.
In May 2021 the new format of the World Cup was introduced in Hattrick and an official European Cup is now available. The EHF European Championship will be no longer organized as a friendly competition by EHF, but the federation continues to support the tournament, providing statistics, articles, awards etc for the tournament.
